Turpan Cultural/Historical Tour - 3 Days

This 3 day tour is perfect for seeing all the interesting sites of Turpan and experiencing the real life of Uyghurs as we visit a family in Tuyuk Village for the night. Learn more about how the weather provides the perfect environment for the delicious grapes and raisins grown and dried here.

Turpan continues to be one of the most popular destinations along the Silk Road. Turpan is a fertile oasis thriving in the hottest and driest places in China. Located in the Turpan Depression (154.5m below sea level), Turpan has thrived for centuries by utilizing the ancient karez network of underground man-made tunnels to channel run-off water from the Tian Shan Mountains to the Turpan Basin. Turpan is famous for it's exceptional grapes and it's beautiful and unique culture. Stepping into Turpan feels like stepping back in time. Turpan is not to be missed.

Day 1

Our guide and driver will either meet you at your hotel in Urumqi or pick you up from the train station in Turpan in the morning and drive to Turpan City to begin your tour. We will visit the ancient city of Idkut (Gaochang), the Astana Tombs, the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, Flaming Mt., and the very interesting caves in Tuyuk village. Tonight we will stay with a local Uyghur family in this village (it is non touristy) and taste real Uyghur food in a real Uyghur community. You will have time to hike in the village to learn more about their lifestyle.

Day 2

Today we will continue enjoying the many sites of Turpan. Places to visit include the remains of the ancient city of Jiao He, Emin Tower and Mosque, the unique Kariz water system, and the local Museum. Tonight we will enjoy dinner and a performance in the Grape Valley.

Day 3

Today you will have time to explore the city and local bazaars and see any remaining sites you'd like to visit before returning to Urumqi or before we see you off at the train station.
